ONE OF THE BENEFITS OF A FREEZING FEBRUARY IS AN UP CLOSE LOOK AT THE POWER OF NATURE

THE CADILLAC ATS ALL WHEEL DRIVE COUPE TOOK US TO THE LAKE IN SUREFOOTED STYLE. ONCE THERE IT FELT LIKE WE COULD JUST WALK ACROSS LAKE ERIE AS IT WAS FROZEN AS FAR AS THE EYE COULD SEE.
With all of the recent snow and ice you might be reluctant to head out too far on a Sunday drive this time of year, but PENNDOT has done a good job of clearing the roads, there are less people out in some of the outdoor settings and the cold cold February has brought about some natural beauty in a mostly frozen over Lake Erie, the destination of this weeks Drivetime Sunday Drive!
A light snow on a recent Saturday was the perfect chance for the Drivetime Road Test vehicle of the week, the Cadillac ATS All Wheel Drive coupe to show its stuff on the road so I took off for the just over two hour trip due north on I-79.
Erie could be a bit of an underrated town. It has seen some hard times in the past few years but still has a pretty good college town vibe to it, some beautiful homes to cruise around and look at, a revitalized waterfront and of course the nature preserve at Presque Isle, all of this butted right up against a beautifully frozen Lake Erie.
It is an incredible sight. Where boats usually ply across blue waters in warmer weather you now can see vast expanses of sterile white sheets of ice as far as the eye can see. Whether you stick to the Erie waterfront or head out into the Presque nature preserve you are struck by the expansiveness of the ice. It really does beckon you to see if you can make the walk to Canada. Probably not a good idea as the Lake is only about 85% frozen and you might not want to run into the 15% that hasn't become solid yet! It definitely is a sight to see though.
While in Erie there are some great other things to do including the Erie Maritime Museum, the Erie Art Museum and the Tom Ridge Center, all indoor attractions that can keep you out of the cold. If you catch it right you might also be able to see an Erie Otters game at the Erie Insurance Arena. The OHL franchise has been playing some great defensive hockey this year and sits atop the Midwest Division.
You can also make a pretty good day out of it by visiting some of the great wineries that straddle the Pennsylvania/New York border along US Route 20 and the shore of Lake Erie. Just remember to appoint someone the designated driver! It was a luxurious ride up in the ATS coupe, the Cadillac all wheel drive handling all of the road conditions well, even in a slushy mix. A very comfortable ride too. I will be reviewing the ATS in the coming weeks on the Drivetime Road Test. That is another edition of the Sunday Drive.
