IF YOU EVER WONDER WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY RUTH, THE SUNDAY DRIVE FOUND HIM IN ZELEINOPLE
BY VINNIE RICHICHI
On this edition of THE SUNDAY DRIVE we jump in the 2015 Buick LaCrosse AWD and take a short trip mileage wise but a long trip in our minds to the sweetest spot on Route 19, Baldinger’s Food From All Nations in Zelienople, PA
While Baldinger’s name says food of all nations it really should be nostalgia candy store because that is exactly what it is. Leave yourself a lot of time when you stop at the long white building just south of town on Route 19, because when you walk in you will be in a wonderland of sweets, smells, sounds and sights that you probably haven’t seen since you used to spend your allowance on Bonomo Turkish Taffy, Lik-M-Aid and candy buttons.
IF THERE IS A CANDY YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN CHANCES IT WILL BE ON THE WALL OR SHELVES AT BALDINGERS ON ROUTE 19
Baldinger’s which has been in business since 1933 sells all of those candies that you have either forgotten or figured they didn’t make anymore. They are all here…Bit O Honey, Chuckles, Candy Cigarettes and Cigars, Sugar Daddies, Gummy Bears even those coke like bottles that have the sweet syrup in them are all laid out on shelves that bring you back to a different time in your life with every step.
Baldinger’s also has all of your favorite bulk candies in bins on tables that stretch the length of the store…you can pick from Mallo Cups, the biggest triple dipped malted milk balls I have ever seen, chocolate stars, coconut clumps, orange slices, cherry slices and even those banana flavor wedges that to this day I still can’t figure out what they are made from but like candy corn…who cares?
Tables and tables of candies that will again remind you of a time simpler. If it is a favorite candy chances you are going to find it in this place as well as a memory or two of a friend in a time when the sharing of a candy bar or a strip of candy buttons was a true sign of friendship and parents never looked at things like fat content and sugar percentage.
Baldinger’s also has a wide selection of baking supplies and incredible cookie cutters including the tow truck shaped one that now sits in my kitchen.
It may not be the physically healthiest place in the world or a great place for a diet but like an old TV show or seeing a car that looks like your dad’s car when you were 10 years old drive by there is a sense of comfort and joy at Baldingers. Walking through the aisles and seeing those hard candies that used to sit in you grandmothers candy dish from Thanksgiving clear through New Year’s Day was a sweet way to spend a snowy Sunday afternoon.
